Platform privilege escalation via exposed API key
Published Apr 23, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Sensitive-key exposure in Rapid7 Insight Agent through 3 April 2024 allows local users to authenticate to the Rapid7 Platform with high privileges. Agent installation automatically generated an overprivileged API key in logging.json, while default file access exposed that credential to local users. Exploitation requires local access to logging.json; the stolen key then authenticates to APIs beyond log ingestion, including user management.
