SYSTEM privilege escalation via junction-following quarantine restore
Published May 13, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Incorrect privilege assignment in TotalAV 6.0.740 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges through a crafted quarantine restore. TotalAV's quarantine restore runs as SYSTEM and follows a user-controlled NTFS junction, writing a restored DLL into C:\Windows\System32. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access, a quarantined attacker-controlled DLL, creation of the junction, and a service that loads the planted DLL; successful execution grants SYSTEM control.
