CVE-2024-31420Network attack vector

Unrecoverable virt-handler crash via NULL pointer dereference

Published Apr 3, 2024 · Updated Nov 20, 2025

NULL pointer dereference in KubeVirt for Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization 4.15.0 allows guest OS users to crash virt-handler. Red Hat identifies the trigger as repeated vm-dump-metrics --virtio calls followed by VM deletion but does not publish the affected function or object. Exploitation requires access to a guest configured with DownwardMetrics and leaves the node's virt-handler unable to recover on its own.
