Local privilege escalation via stale accessibility grants
Published Jul 9, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Improper privilege management in Android 12, 12L, 13, and 14 allows local users to retain a hidden accessibility service after app updates. The updateServicesLocked method rebuilds installed services but fails to remove absent components from the enabled-service and touch-exploration grant lists. Exploitation requires user interaction but no existing execution privilege, and the retained service can operate without appearing in Settings.
