SYSTEM privilege escalation via unquoted service path
Published Jul 31, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Unquoted service path in Plug&Track Thermoscan IP 20211103 allows local users to execute code as NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM. The ThermoscanIP_Scrutation service launches an executable from a whitespace-containing path without quoting it, allowing Windows to select an attacker-controlled executable from a parent path. Exploitation requires high local privileges, user interaction, and non-default write permission on C:; successful execution grants SYSTEM control.
