CVE-2024-31144

Configuration manipulation via fraudulent metadata VDI restore

Published Feb 14, 2025 · Updated Apr 26, 2025

Metadata injection in Xen Project Xapi 1.249.x allows guest OS users to alter restored VM and storage configuration through a crafted VDI. The restore path mounts VDIs in UUID order and accepts the first disk containing a plausible metadata file, even though guest owners control VDI contents. Exploitation requires a fraudulent backup to sort before the legitimate backup, insider knowledge to make it plausible, and an administrator to initiate recovery; consumed metadata controls VM creation, disk assignment, memory, CPUs, and GPUs.
