CVE-2024-30949Network attack vector

Undefined behavior via erroneous nanosecond multiplication

Published Aug 20, 2024 · Updated Aug 20, 2024

Integer overflow in Newlib 4.3.0 allows attackers to trigger undefined behavior through the RISC-V gettimeofday implementation. The libgloss _gettimeofday code multiplies nanoseconds by 1,000 instead of dividing by 1,000 when populating microseconds. Reachability requires firmware built with that RISC-V syscall implementation and code that invokes gettimeofday; the directly demonstrated result is incorrect time data, not code execution.
