CVE-2024-30171Network attack vector

RSA secret disclosure via handshake timing differences

Published May 9, 2024 · Updated Aug 19, 2024

Timing side channel in Bouncy Castle for Java before 1.78 allows remote attackers to infer RSA secrets through crafted TLS handshakes. Exception handling in the TLS APIs and underlying cryptographic operations produces distinguishable timing during RSA PKCS#1.5 processing. Exploitation requires repeated network measurements with RSA key exchange enabled; the reported consequence is confidentiality loss only.
