Authenticated file disclosure via XML resolver confusion
Published May 14, 2024 · Updated May 3, 2025
XXE in Microsoft SharePoint Server 2016, 2019, and Subscription Edition allows remote authenticated users to read service-account files. BaseXmlDataSource gives an attacker-controlled DataFile URL to SPXmlDataSource and XmlSecureResolver; inconsistent parsing of a malformed file URL grants unrestricted resolution before DTD blocking occurs. A low-privileged user who can upload XML and add a data source to a SharePoint page can read local files as the farm service account or issue server-side requests.
