Local privilege escalation via DWM use-after-free
Published May 14, 2024 · Updated May 3, 2025
Use-after-free in Microsoft Windows DWM Core Library allows local users to elevate privileges and execute code in the system context. Microsoft identifies the weakness class but has not disclosed which DWM object, function, or lifetime transition frees and later reuses memory. Successful exploitation requires local low-privileged access and no user interaction; resulting system-context code can read, alter, or delete data.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

Attacks
What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
