SYSTEM privilege escalation via out-of-bounds read
Published May 14, 2024 · Updated Aug 27, 2025
Out-of-bounds read in the Windows Common Log File System Driver allows local users to elevate privileges to SYSTEM. Microsoft has not published which CLFS.sys parsing path performs the invalid read or which attacker-controlled structure supplies its bounds. A low-privileged local user must execute code on the target; no user interaction is required, and successful exploitation grants full system control.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.

What attackers are doing with it
Daily unique IPs observed by Shadowserver honeypots for known exploited vulnerabilities (KEVs). Missing observations do not establish an absence of attacks.
