CVE-2024-2947

Local root command execution via crafted sosreport filename

Published Mar 28, 2024 · Updated Nov 20, 2025

OS command injection in Cockpit 270 through 313 allows local users to gain root privileges through a crafted sosreport filename. The sosRemove function interpolates a path from attacker-controlled /var/tmp into a single-quoted rm command executed with superuser privileges. Exploitation requires an administrator to delete the planted report through Cockpit, after which the injected Unix shell command runs as root.
