Crash or code execution via heap parsing overflow
Published May 9, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Heap buffer overflow in The HDF Group HDF5 1.14.3 and earlier allows local users to corrupt the instruction pointer via a crafted HDF5 file. The global-heap deserializer copies the file image into a heap buffer, then parses attacker-controlled object metadata without adequate bounds validation. The local gate is parsing an attacker-controlled HDF5 file; exploitation crashes the process or executes code with that process's privileges.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
