CVE-2024-29159Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Process crash via scale-offset buffer overrun

Published May 9, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025

Buffer overflow in HDF5 1.14.3 and earlier allows attackers to crash a parsing process via malformed scale-offset-encoded HDF5 files. The H5Z__filter_scaleoffset filter processes malformed dataset data without adequate bounds checking, corrupting the instruction pointer. Triggering the flaw requires an application or service to parse an attacker-controlled HDF5 file; the vendor test demonstrates a crash, while public evidence does not demonstrate code execution.
