Arbitrary file overwrite via unchecked tar extraction
Published Jun 6, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Path traversal in Amazon Web Services Deep Java Library before 0.27.0 allows attackers to overwrite files through a crafted tar archive. The Spark extension's download_and_extract function passes archive members to Python tarfile.extractall without checking that resolved paths remain under the destination directory. An application must invoke the helper on attacker-controlled archive content; traversal writes with that process's filesystem permissions.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
