CVE-2024-28851

Privileged data exposure via replaceable temporary helper

Published Mar 15, 2024 · Updated Aug 28, 2024

Privilege-management flaw in Snowflake Hive Metastore Connector before dfbf87dff4 allows local users to access privileged data via a helper script. The script writes a Microsoft-hosted utility to predictable /tmp/HDInsightUtilities-v01.sh and then sources that path, allowing replacement between download and execution. Exploitation requires local access, high privileges, and user interaction; the replacement runs attacker-controlled shell code in the executing user's privileged context.
