CVE-2024-28829

Local privilege escalation via unsafe binary execution

Published Aug 20, 2024 · Updated Aug 21, 2024

Privilege escalation in the mk_informix plugin for Checkmk allows local users to gain root privileges through unsafe binary execution. Several dbaccess and onstat call sites omit the plugin's safe-execution handling and trust binaries selected from the configured Informix directory while the agent normally runs as root. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access and a deployed mk_informix plugin; substituting those binaries executes attacker-controlled code with the agent's privileges.
