CVE-2024-2880Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Unauthorized member bans via missing permission check

Published Jul 11, 2024 · Updated Sep 17, 2024

Access control flaw in GitLab 16.5 through 16.11.5, 17.0 through 17.0.3, and 17.1 through 17.1.1 allows remote authenticated users to ban members. The group-member ban endpoint accepts a backend request from a Guest with the admin_group_member custom permission without enforcing the Owner-only authorization required for that action. A group owner must first assign the custom permission; exploitation then lets the lower-privileged account block even higher-privileged members from the group and its resources.
