Arbitrary code execution via HDR pixel conversion
Published Mar 20, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024
Heap buffer overflow in FreeImage 3.19.0 allows local users to execute arbitrary code by loading a crafted HDR image. PluginHDR.cpp's rgbe_RGBEToFloat() reads and writes beyond a heap buffer while converting attacker-controlled RGBE pixel data to floating-point values. Exploitation requires an application linked to the library to process the malicious HDR file, and successful corruption runs code in that application's context.
