Code execution via EXR stack buffer overwrite
Published Mar 20, 2024 · Updated Oct 28, 2024
Stack buffer overflow in FreeImage 3.19.0 allows local users to execute arbitrary code by loading a crafted EXR image. During FreeImage_Load, Imf_2_2::copyIntoFrameBuffer writes decoded EXR data beyond a stack buffer while filling the image frame buffer. The flaw is reached when software using the library parses the malicious file, and the published test case demonstrates a write fault under AddressSanitizer.
