CVE-2024-28244Network attack vector

Rendering hang via reset macro-expansion counters

Published Mar 25, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Denial of service in KaTeX 0.15.4 through 0.16.9 allows remote authenticated users to hang rendering via crafted math input. Each Unicode subscript or superscript group creates a new Parser with a fresh macro-expansion count instead of inheriting its parent's count, bypassing maxExpand. The target must render untrusted \def or \newcommand expressions; processing can tie up the main thread, exhaust memory, or overflow the stack.
