CVE-2024-28133Known exploitation

Root code execution via untrusted utility search path

Published May 14, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Privilege escalation in Phoenix Contact CHARX SEC-3xxx firmware 1.5.1 and earlier allows local users to execute arbitrary code as root. The privileged charx_set_timezone binary executes a program from an untrusted search location, allowing attacker-controlled code to inherit its root context. Exploitation requires an existing ability to run low-privileged code locally on the charging controller; network access alone is insufficient.
