Service hang via wildcard regex backtracking
Published Aug 8, 2024 · Updated Aug 30, 2024
Regular expression denial of service in RefMatcher in GitLab EE/CE allows remote authenticated users to hang server-side request processing. RefMatcher applies wildcard branch-name patterns through a backtracking regular expression without an effective complexity bound for crafted names. Affected releases are 11.3 through 17.0.5, 17.1 through 17.1.3, and 17.2 through 17.2.1; low-privileged network access is required.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
Is a vulnerable build present?
Compare these published version ranges with your installed build and any vendor patches.
- Affected versionversion=11.3 <17.0.6
- Affected versionversion=17.1 <17.1.4
