CVE-2024-27862

Disk-encryption disablement via setup state mismanagement

Published Jul 29, 2024 · Updated Apr 2, 2026

A setup-state logic flaw in Apple macOS before 14.6 allows physically proximate attackers to disable FileVault during initial setup. Apple attributes the error to state management during Mac setup but has not disclosed the faulty code path or state transition. The condition requires Lockdown Mode to be enabled while a Mac is being set up, after which FileVault disk encryption becomes disabled and data-at-rest protection is lost.
