CVE-2024-27273

Local privilege escalation via SO_PEERID handling

Published May 7, 2024 · Updated Aug 2, 2024

Privilege escalation in IBM AIX 7.2 and 7.3 allows local users to gain elevated privileges through Unix-domain datagram sockets. The kernel's SO_PEERID handling for Unix-domain datagram sockets incorrectly assigns privileges, but IBM has not disclosed the faulty operation or data flow. Exploitation requires local access and an application that uses SO_PEERID; success crosses a privilege boundary with system-wide data and service impact.
