Root code execution via writable library paths
Published Jun 14, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Incorrect permissions in Toshiba Tec e-STUDIO MFP firmware allow local users to execute arbitrary code as root through library replacement. The firmware places four world-writable directories in LD_LIBRARY_PATH, so privileged processes load attacker-replaced shared libraries. Local access is sufficient; remote attackers must first obtain a file-write primitive on the device, and successful exploitation gives root control.
