Kernel crash via null encoder metadata dereference
Published May 1, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
NULL pointer dereference in Linux kernel 6.5 allows local users to crash the kernel through the i915 display driver's BIOS helper. intel_bios_encoder_supports_dp_dual_mode() accesses devdata->child without first rejecting a null devdata pointer. The path requires low privileges and an Intel i915 display configuration with no VBT or no declared encoder; the reported impact is availability only.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
