CVE-2024-26925

Kernel compromise via nf_tables commit-lock race

Published Apr 24, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

Improper locking in Linux nf_tables and affected Siemens firmware allows local users to crash systems or gain kernel privileges. nf_tables_module_autoload releases the commit mutex between nft_gc_seq_begin and nft_gc_seq_end, letting asynchronous garbage collection reclaim expired objects within the same sequence and causing use-after-free, double-free, and slab corruption. Basic local access is sufficient where an unprivileged user namespace grants CAP_NET_ADMIN; no remote packet path reaches the transaction-abort race.
