CVE-2024-26923

Local privilege escalation via AF_UNIX garbage-collector race

Published Apr 24, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2026

A race condition in affected Linux kernels allows local users to corrupt kernel memory by racing AF_UNIX connect() with SCM_RIGHTS passing. The garbage collector can scan different child sets before and after an embryo socket is queued, overcount inflight references, and leave a dangling pointer in gc_inflight_list. Low-privileged local access is sufficient; successful exploitation grants kernel-level privilege escalation, while failed attempts can crash the host.
