CVE-2024-26920

Service interruption via undetected snapshot allocation failure

Published Apr 17, 2024 · Updated May 23, 2026

Resource-management flaw in the Linux kernel tracing subsystem allows local users to interrupt service by registering a snapshot trigger. The register_snapshot_trigger() path treats a failed tracing_alloc_snapshot_instance() call as success, so registration proceeds without the required snapshot buffer. Reaching the faulty path requires write access to tracefs and a snapshot-allocation failure; tracing access is restricted to root by default on Ubuntu, and the reported consequence is availability loss only.
