Service hang via hisi_sas semaphore deadlock
Published Apr 17, 2024 · Updated May 11, 2026
Improper locking in the Linux kernel hisi_sas driver in 6.7 allows local users to hang controller recovery during an ECC fault. The offline path holds the hisi_hba semaphore while ABORT_DEV times out and starts an automatic dump; reset and dump paths then wait in a lock cycle. Exploitation requires local low-privileged access, a PHY-disable operation, and a simultaneous double-bit ECC error on a HiSilicon SAS controller, resulting in hung kernel workqueues and blocked controller recovery.
