CVE-2024-26832

Memory exhaustion via stranded zswap folios

Published Apr 17, 2024 · Updated May 23, 2026

Incomplete folio cleanup in the Linux zswap writeback path allows local users to exhaust memory through repeated swap-entry races. When zswap_writeback_entry detects an invalidated and recycled swap entry, it deletes the new swap-cache folio but returns without unlocking or releasing its reference. Reachability requires zswap to be enabled and the rare writeback race to occur; each hit strands a folio indefinitely, enabling gradual service interruption through memory depletion.
