CVE-2024-26685

Kernel crash via super-root async-write flag race

Published Apr 3, 2024 · Updated May 23, 2026

Denial of service in the Linux kernel nilfs2 filesystem allows local users to crash the system through concurrent backing-device writebacks. The super-root block buffer redundantly carries the async_write marker despite sharing buffers with the backing device, so parallel writeback can conflict with that flag before end_buffer_async_write checks it. Reachability requires local nilfs2 filesystem activity and independent backing-device writeback; the bounded consequence is a BUG_ON kernel crash and service interruption.
