Stored script execution via unsanitized BBCode links
Published Apr 3, 2024 · Updated Mar 18, 2025
Stored XSS in Friendica 2023.12 allows remote attackers to execute script in readers' browsers through crafted BBCode links. The BBCode parser accepts a quote inside a URL value and emits the remaining text as an onmouseover attribute instead of sanitizing the link. A reader must view the stored post and hover over its link; the script then runs in that reader's Friendica session and can access or alter session-visible data.
