Sandbox escape via mozwer process-type confusion

Published Mar 19, 2024 · Updated Mar 13, 2025

Sandbox escape in Mozilla Firefox before 124 and Firefox ESR and Thunderbird before 115.9 allows attackers to run arbitrary code on Windows. A compromised sandboxed content process can falsify its type in mozwer, causing Windows Error Reporting to launch crashreporter.exe with attacker-controlled environment variables. The inherited variables can load a chosen library without interaction or start a chosen executable after a crash-reporter prompt.
