Service interruption via JPEG encoder cleanup omissions
Published Mar 5, 2024 · Updated Apr 16, 2025
Memory leakage in JpegEncoder::Encode in Struktur AG libheif 1.17.6 and earlier allows attackers to interrupt service via crafted HEIF input. Three error paths return without freeing EXIF data, destroying the libjpeg compressor, or closing the output file. The vulnerable path requires local or application-mediated processing of a crafted HEIF file, and repeated encoding can exhaust resources and interrupt the process.
