Application crash via XInclude expansion during backtracking
Published Feb 4, 2024 · Updated Nov 3, 2025
Use-after-free in GNOME libxml2 before 2.11.7 and 2.12.0 through 2.12.4 allows remote attackers to crash applications via crafted XML. In xmlreader.c, XInclude processing can run while XML Reader backtracks, leaving xmlValidatePopElement to use an element after its storage is freed. The flaw is reachable only when XML Reader DTD validation and XInclude expansion are both enabled; the grounded impact is a process crash.
