CVE-2024-24974Public exploitNetwork attack vector

Authenticated privileged-service access via remotely exposed named pipe

Published Jul 8, 2024 · Updated Aug 10, 2024

Improper channel restriction in OpenVPN 2.6.9 and earlier allows remote authenticated users to access its privileged Windows service. The openvpnserv.exe service creates the \openvpn\service named pipe without rejecting remote clients, allowing remote requests to launch operations. Network access requires valid credentials for a member of the OpenVPN Administrators group; this CVE alone exposes service interaction, not code execution.
