Remote code execution via unchecked path concatenation
Published May 28, 2024 · Updated Feb 13, 2025
Stack-based buffer overflow in AutomationDirect P3-550E 1.2.10.9 allows remote attackers to execute code via a crafted UDP packet. The FileSelect handler on UDP port 9999 passes an attacker-controlled path length to strncat while appending directory data to a 256-byte stack buffer, without checking the destination capacity. No authentication or user interaction is required, and return-address corruption enables code execution on the PLC.
