CVE-2024-24579Public exploit

Arbitrary file writes via unchecked archive paths

Published Jan 31, 2024 · Updated Aug 23, 2024

Path traversal in Anchore Stereoscope before 0.0.1 allows local users to write files outside its temporary extraction directory. UntarToDirectory joined the destination with an untrusted tar header name, then created directories or opened files without checking that the resulting path remained beneath the destination. Exploitation requires a crafted OCI tar archive to be supplied to a consuming application, and file-write effects are bounded by that process's filesystem permissions.
