Disputed analyzer crash via short address lookup
Published Feb 21, 2024 · Updated Nov 4, 2025
Heap-buffer over-read in Wireshark before 4.2.0 allows remote attackers to crash packet analysis through crafted traffic. The ws_manuf_lookup_str path reads six address bytes even when the packet-derived buffer is shorter, causing the OSS-Fuzz out-of-bounds read. Wireshark states that the report rests on invalid assumptions and that neither 4.2.0 nor any other released version was affected.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
