Owner account takeover via unsanitized SVG profile image
Published Feb 11, 2024 · Updated Nov 7, 2024
Stored XSS in Ghost through 5.76.0 allows remote authenticated users to take over the Owner account via a crafted SVG profile image. The profile-image upload path stores SVG content without sanitizing embedded script, so JavaScript executes when a staff member opens the direct image URL and can call the local Admin API. A Contributor account must upload the file and induce the Owner to view its direct URL; successful execution grants Administrator privileges and transfers site ownership.
