Database backup exposure via unrestricted filename deletion
Published May 1, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Improper input validation in MyBB before 1.8.38 allows remote authenticated users to expose database backups through an Admin CP request. The backup deletion handler in admin/modules/tools/backupdb.php accepts .htaccess because it checks only that the basename exists, rather than requiring a regular .gz or .sql file. An administrator must submit the deletion request, and exposure follows only when Apache serves the backups directory after its access-control file is removed.

Exploitability
Present is not the same as exploitable
Compare your product and version with the public record. A matching version still requires validation against your environment.
