Authenticated script execution via unsafe message append
Published Jan 12, 2024 · Updated Jun 3, 2025
Cross-site scripting in Wikimedia Foundation MediaWiki Phonos before 1.40.2 allows remote authenticated users to execute script in a user's browser. In PhonosButton.js, handleMissingFile() passes the user-controlled phonos-purge-needed-error text to jQuery append(), which interprets it as HTML instead of text. A remote authenticated user must control the message, and another user must trigger the missing-file error; successful script execution can read or alter data available to that browser session.
