Application exception via null locale cache lookup
Published Apr 10, 2024 · Updated Jul 9, 2026
Null-pointer dereference in Joda-Time 2.12.5 allows attackers to trigger an exception by passing a null locale to wordBased(Locale). PeriodFormat.wordBased(Locale) uses the supplied locale directly as a ConcurrentHashMap cache key before loading its resource bundle, and the map rejects null keys. The claim requires a consuming application to pass null to this API, and the CVE is disputed because multiple parties found insufficient evidence that this behavior constitutes a vulnerability.
