Local code execution via Electron Node mode
Published Aug 2, 2024 · Updated Aug 5, 2024
Code injection in Western Digital WD Discovery before 5.0.589 allows local users to execute code via ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE. The Electron launcher honors ELECTRON_RUN_AS_NODE, causing the packaged application executable to start as a Node.js runtime for attacker-supplied JavaScript. A malicious application with standard user permissions can trigger the behavior only when WD Discovery is installed, gaining code execution in its application context.
