CVE-2024-22030Network attack vector

Node takeover via permissive agent CA validation

Published Oct 16, 2024 · Updated Oct 16, 2024

Improper certificate validation in Rancher 2.7.0 through 2.7.14, 2.8.0 through 2.8.7, and 2.9.0 through 2.9.1 allows attackers to take over nodes. Agents in system-store mode trust certificates chaining to the operating system trust store instead of limiting trust to the CA in Rancher's cacerts setting. Exploitation requires control of the configured server-url domain or its DNS plus a trusted-CA certificate, enabling a rogue server to control connected nodes.
