CVE-2024-21404Network attack vector

Service interruption via X.509 null dereference

Published Feb 13, 2024 · Updated Aug 10, 2026

Denial of service in Microsoft .NET allows remote attackers to interrupt applications via crafted X.509 certificates. OpenSSL-backed X.509 parsing reaches a null-pointer dereference, but Microsoft has not disclosed the parser routine or malformed-certificate property that triggers it. Microsoft .NET 6.0.26 and earlier, 7.0.15 and earlier, and 8.0.1 and earlier are affected when applications use OpenSSL to parse attacker-controlled certificates; .NET web servers on Windows are unaffected.
