CVE-2024-21107

SYSTEM privilege escalation via insecure installation permissions

Published Apr 16, 2024 · Updated Aug 15, 2024

Improper access control in Oracle VM VirtualBox Core before 7.0.16 allows local users to gain SYSTEM privileges on Windows hosts. The installer assigns overly permissive access rights to a non-default installation directory, allowing code injection into the SYSTEM-level VBoxSDS service. An authenticated local user needs access to a Windows host with a non-default installation path; successful exploitation grants SYSTEM control over VirtualBox data and execution.
