System-privileged escalation via venc type confusion
Published Jul 1, 2024 · Updated Aug 1, 2024
Type confusion in the venc component on affected MediaTek platforms allows local users with System privilege to escalate privileges. The component treats an object as an incompatible type and performs an out-of-bounds write, but MediaTek has not disclosed the affected function or attacker-controlled input. Exploitation requires prior System execution privilege, needs no user interaction, and affects listed Android, OpenWrt, Yocto, and RDK-B releases on affected chipsets.
